Is Rubber Roofing Best For Cold Climates?

With the autumn well and truly upon us, with winter fast approaching, our homes, garages and summer houses are at risk of being victim to the harsh weather the colder months bring. Some of the most common issues that your home may face in the autumn and winter seasons are roof damage, due to build up of debris, rain, snow and ice. Many pre-existing structural problems can also be brought to the forefront during the colder weather, such as a damaged or leaky roof. This can lead to expensive damages and repairs further down the line, if these are not looked at as soon as they are noticed.

Why is Rubber Roofing a good option even in the winter?

If the time has come for you to invest in a new flat roof before the winter hits, EPDM membranes are a durable, long lasting and strong choice of roofing material. EPDM is engineered to remain resilient against the great British weather we are so used to during the winter. The rubber is waterproof, but also resistant to UV rays, meaning you can fit EPDM with confidence knowing that it is a fool proof system for both summer and winter seasons.

The Rubber membrane is not easily torn or punctured, meaning there is far less potential for damage in a storm or heavy downpour. Less damage means less deterioration and consequently, less repairs. EPDM membranes are a slightly higher priced option than other roofing materials, however due to its robustness and little maintenance it will need for up to 50years, it offers excellent value for money, saving you more frequent payments on repairs and roof replacements.

Are there other benefits for choosing an EPDM membrane to survive the winter?

As well as being extremely weather resistant and therefore a great solution for your flat roof to survive the winter, there are a whole host of benefits that come with single-ply rubber roofing. These include;

  • Quick and easy to install

  • Life-span of up to 50 years

  • Airtight and waterproof

  • Provides protection against all types of weather year round

  • Lightweight system

  • Tear and puncture resistant

In order to keep your EPDM roof in the perfect condition, it is important to keep an eye out for any build up of debris or snow which could result in a shorter lifespan due to the added weight, or blocked gutters and drainage systems.
