How Does Snow & Ice Affect A Flat Roof?

How Does Snow & Ice Affect A Flat Roof?

With winter once again upon us, and a snowy season right around the corner, it is important to understand how the cold weather, snow and ice affects your flat roof, and how best to maintain it throughout the colder months. Although EPDM membranes are a durable option throughout all seasons, it may be worth checking your flat roof regularly to ensure the adverse weather conditions have not damaged or caused any problems to your flat roof.

A single square foot of compacted snow can weigh 50lbs, and unlike any pitched roofs, a flat roof cannot rely on gravity to help pull the snow from the roofs surface. The increased weight of snow surprisingly will not put any strain on the membrane and the roof's structure.

How to safely remove snow and ice from your flat roof

If you are not regularly checking your roof, you may not notice the build up of snow and ice until it is too late. The flat roofs made with an EPDM membrane, such as the Firestone Rubbercover, are designed to withstand any season, and any weather condition. However, if you clear the snow from your flat roof, there are a few precautions you need to take in order to not damage the roof's surface. Make sure you are not attempting to remove large amounts of snow or ice from the roof if you are not confident in your ability, and call in a professional to do so for you. It is important to make sure you are not being too heavy handed when using tools, to ensure you cause no rips, scrapes or damage to your flat roof.
