EPDM Rubber Roofing Insulation: Improving Energy Efficiency

EPDM Rubber Roofing Insulation: Improving Energy Efficiency

Since its advent in the 1960s, EPDM has cemented itself as the go-to material for flat roofing. Its long lifespan and high durability to UV and sun damage make EPDM roofing insulation the ultimate choice for any commercial or residential roofing project.

This post will explore how EPDM has risen to prominence as a superb insulator in both hot and cold roof installations.

We recently released a blog post on the benefits of hot roofs vs cold roofs for EPDM installations, exploring additional ways to reduce household energy costs and increase the value of your home.

EPDM's insulative properties

Due to its nature as a synthetic rubber, EPDM has strong insulative properties, both in repelling and retaining heat depending on the season: this is what cements EPDM as a versatile material all year round, as it works to keep homes warm in winter, and cool in summer.

When installing EPDM over insulation, it can be installed on both hot and cold roof constructions, meaning the already-strong insulative capabilities of the system are further amplified by the substrate.

The Importance of EPDM As An Insulator

In a world where ‘net zero’ is not only a goal but a realistic milestone, the benefits of systems which accelerate this transition are critical.

With a large amount of generated heat being lost through insufficient roofing materials, and with the increase in energy reliance making up the shortfall, the importance of thermal insulation becomes evermore present in homes. For maximum benefit, we always suggest that the system is coupled with insulation under the EPDM, in either a hot or cold roof configuration.

By improving the thermal loss in commercial and residential buildings by using EPDM, lower reliance on non-renewable energy can occur, moving the world closer to net zero by 2030.

We care about the environment and believe that our Techno EPDM makes a real difference. Through our ambitions, we have created numerous posts on our EPDM roofing blog detailing the importance of EPDM towards reaching a fully renewable, net zero future.
